Sheriff's Department Information
The Northampton County Sheriff's Department is a professional law enforcement agency charged with a multitude of duties and responsibilities, including providing building and court room security at the County Courthouse and other County buildings, transporting prisoners, locating and apprehending fugitives, serving warrants, legal papers and notices, administering the foreclosure, repossession and sale of real and personal property, and issuing a variety of permits. The Sheriffs Department, which is accredited by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, is located in the basement level of the County Courthouse at 669 Washington Street, Easton, Pennsylvania.

Support Services Division
The Support Services Division is responsible for the oversight and control of internal functions throughout the Sheriff's Department. This includes fleet maintenance, property/evidence, electronic access control, and inventory and storage of department equipment. The Support Services Division is also responsible for the administration and issuance of several types of licenses pursuant to Pennsylvania Law, including licenses to carry concealed firearms, licenses to sell firearms and licenses to sell precious metals.
Prison Transport Division
The Prison Transport Division is responsible for the transportation of incarcerated prisoners throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This includes Adult and Juvenile individuals who have been court ordered to and from various correctional facilities and institutions. The Prison Transport Division is also responsible for the transportation of incarcerated individuals to medical facilities for treatment.
Courts Division
By far our largest division, the Protective Services Division is tasked with the safety and security of all those who work in or visit the Northampton County Courthouse or any of the other four County facilities for which the Northampton County Sheriff's Department provides physical security. The Protective Services Division strives to establish and maintain a safe and secure environment in which court proceedings and the business of county government can be transacted without distraction or interference. Providing effective security for the court proceedings of the Court of Common Pleas is also a primary mission of the Protective Services Division, as is the screening for prohibited weapons or items of individuals who enter our secure facilities.
Criminal Division
The Criminal Division is responsible for serving court issued warrants by investigating and attempting to locate fugitives throughout Northampton County. The Criminal Division utilizes sophisticated investigation tools and techniques and engages with all levels of the law enforcement community to locate and apprehend fugitives, particularly those who have proven to be violent and a risk to our community. The members of the Criminal Division are cross sworn as Deputy United States Marshals and are active participants in the United States Marshal's Service Violent Fugitive Task Force.
Civil Division
The Civil Division is responsible for the service and enforcement of court orders, writs of summons, complaints, judgments and injunctions and other legal obligations in a timely and effective manner according to the Pennsylvania Rules of Civil Procedure. This process begins with the docketing of civil documents in the Prothonotary's Office and service of orders by the Deputies assigned to this division. Northampton County Sheriff Sales and Real Estate Sales are conducted by the members of the Civil Division.
Community Outreach
One of the most important and enjoyable functions performed by the Northampton County Sheriff's Department is providing educational and awareness presentations to members of our community. Our goal is to engage and give back to the community by participating in events to educate and protect all members of our community, particularly our youth and elderly members. We have Deputy Sheriffs who lecture on a variety of topics related to public safety and awareness. Through lecturing at seminars and appearing at community events, the Sheriff's Department is committed to educating our community on safety, awareness and prevention topics.
License to Carry Firearms
The Sheriff’s Department is required under Section 6109 (d) of Title 18 Pa C.S. to conduct an investigation into your application. Please carefully read the instructions and information provided on the application before submitting your application to ensure a timely processing. Applicants must present their applications in person to the Sheriffs Department. In accordance with Section §6109 of the Uniform Firearms Act, your background investigation may take up to 45 days. Upon completion of processing, your license to carry will be mailed to you.

Retired Law Enforcement ID
The Northampton County Sheriff's Department is open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with the exception of county holidays or closures, to accept and process Retired Law Enforcement Identification cards. Please carefully read the instructions and information below before submitting.
Please bring with you to Sheriff's Office:
- Retired law enforcement identification card
- Driver's License or other form of official/governmental photographic identification
- Blue qualification card signed by a certified law enforcement firearms instructor
- Money order or certified check in the amount of $5.00 payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (No cash or personal checks will be accepted)
Upon completion of a criminal history check similar to 18 Pa C.S. 6109 (d) (5) through the Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Records and Identification, the Sheriff shall sign and issue the identification card.
License to Sell Firearms
The Northampton County Sheriff’s Department is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the exception of county holidays or closures, to accept and process License to Sell Firearms Applications. Please carefully read the instructions and information provided on the application before submitting your application to ensure a timely processing. Applicants must present their applications in person to the Sheriffs Department.
Precious Metals License
A precious metal dealer license is required of anyone who purchases or makes appraisals of precious metals and their alloys for resale to refiners, brokers, or the public. Precious metals are defined as items of gold, silver, platinum, and their alloys, including jewelry but excluding coins and bullion. The license is valid for one year from date of issue. The $50.00 fee for the license must be paid by check or money order payable to the "Sheriff of Northampton County."
