WHEN: Saturday, June 29, 2024

“As promised, Northampton County is committed to intensifying our train derailment mitigation training in the wake of the March 2nd Norfolk Southern train derailment,” says County Executive Lamont G. McClure.

Following the County’s recent announcement of two Norfolk Southern Rail Safety Training for First Responders and Emergency Managements, additional training with Findlay University is scheduled for Saturday, June 29th.

The Rail Car Incident Response training is an 8-hour, DHS/FEMA-certified, tuition-free, awareness-level course developed to educate rural emergency responders on freight rail car incidents involving hazardous materials. Because most freight rail traffic traverses rural areas, it is imperative that rural responders, especially those in resource limited areas, understand the dangers and other unique hazards these incidents present. Those who should attend are firefighters, first responders, including law enforcement, emergency management personnel, and railroad representatives.

AWR 147: Rail Car Incident Response training topics will include:

  • Design, construction, components and markings of rail tank cars
  • Recognition and identification of chemicals being transported
  • Scene assessment and identification of potential hazards
  • Mitigation strategies for breached freight cars
  • Key resources identification from rail/freight industry as well as federal, state, and private resources
